TL;DR. Use the Realistic method so folds and texture survive, sample from a mid-tone area of the fabric rather than a highlight, and mask the garment so nearby skin tones are protected. Mid-tone saturated garments convert beautifully. White, black and patterned garments are genuinely difficult, and knowing which is which saves the most time.
Why clothing is the common case
Of everything people want to recolor, clothing comes up most. A seller needs the same shirt in five colors. A designer needs a mockup in the client's palette. Someone wants to see whether a jacket would suit them in green before buying it.
Clothing is also, conveniently, one of the better subjects for color replacement. Fabric is opaque, it usually occupies a large contiguous area of the frame, and a garment is normally a single dominant color. Those three properties are close to ideal.
The complications are equally consistent: garments are worn by people, and people have skin and hair whose tones overlap with common clothing colors. Almost every difficulty in this article traces back to that one fact.
Realistic is not optional here
Fabric is defined by how it takes light. A cotton shirt has soft shadows in its folds. A knit has fine variation across its surface. Satin has a bright sheen along the curve. Denim has visible texture and lighter wear at the seams.
All of that lives in the shading, and the Realistic method is what preserves it. The bright parts stay bright and the folds stay dark, so a red shirt becomes a green shirt rather than a green shape.
The Solid method flattens exactly what makes fabric look real, which is why it belongs on logos and flat illustrations rather than on clothing. If a recolored garment looks like a paper cutout, the method is almost always the reason.

Changing a garment color, step by step
Three details do most of the work. Get them right and the rest is straightforward.
Sample from the right part of the fabric
Take the source color from a mid-tone area of the garment: a flat, well-lit section away from both the brightest point and the deepest fold.
A highlight is nearly white and a deep fold is nearly black, and either one gives the tool a poor idea of what the garment actually is. Sampling a highlight in particular is the usual cause of the result where only part of the garment changes and the rest stays stubbornly original.
Mask around skin and hair
This is the step that separates a clean result from a strange one. Skin tones sit close to a large family of clothing colors, particularly beige, tan, peach, rust and warm browns. Raise tolerance far enough to catch a tan garment and you will often catch the hands and face too.
Masking solves it properly. Draw over the garment, and pixels outside that area are protected no matter how similar their color is. Rough coverage is fine, because the color matching still runs inside the region you drew. You are marking where the tool may work, not tracing the outline of the garment.
The same approach protects hair, which frequently overlaps with warm garment colors, and any background object that happens to share the shirt's tone.
Tune tolerance for folds
Clothing spans a wider range of values than most subjects, because folds create genuine shadows and raised areas catch the light. A garment therefore needs more tolerance than a flat object of the same color.
Raise it until the deepest folds are included. If the folds stay original while the flat areas change, tolerance is too low. If color starts creeping outside the garment, you have gone too far, and masking rather than a lower tolerance is the right correction.



How different fabrics behave
Material changes the result more than people expect, because each fabric handles light differently.
- Cotton and linen are the easiest. Matte, opaque, and evenly colored, with soft shadows that convert predictably.
- Knitwear works well and often looks the most convincing, because the fine surface variation survives and sells the texture.
- Denim converts nicely but keeps its character. Lighter wear at the seams stays lighter, which is usually desirable.
- Satin and silk need care. The bright sheen is close to white and carries little color, so it stays pale through the swap. That is often correct, since a sheen should be pale, but a very bright highlight will not take your target color.
- Sheer and lace are difficult. Fabric you can see through blends with whatever is behind it, so those pixels belong to both and convert cleanly to neither.
What does not work
Three cases are worth recognising before you spend time on them.
White and very pale garments. There is almost no color to redirect, so a vivid target produces a tinted white rather than a colored garment. Going the other direction, a saturated garment to a pale one, works fine.
Black garments. Nearly as hard, for the mirror reason: most pixels sit close to neutral with very little chroma, so there is little for the tool to work with.
Patterns and prints. A pattern is several colors in a deliberate relationship. Changing only the dominant one breaks that relationship and the result looks wrong even when each individual swap is clean. Convert every color in the pattern deliberately, or choose a plain garment instead.
If you are selling the garment
